Gimondi and Anquetil: a Great Rivalry

Felice Gimondi (Ita) started the 50th edition of the Giro d’Italia with bronchitis. He struggled with a fast early pace of the Giro, “I had problems staying with the main challenges early in the race,” said Gimondi.

SPECIAL NOTE: Starting in 1967 the Points Classification leader was given a distinctive Red Jersey.

Classification Leadership:

There would be two leader’s jerseys during the 1967 Giro d'Italia:

The leader of the General Classification wore the Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey) Pink jersey

The leader of the Points Classification wore a Maglia Rosso (Red Jersey) RedJersey

The Mountain Classification leader scored points for reaching the summit of a categorized climb ahead of other cyclists. No special Jersey was awarded.

Race Summary:

Stage 6: The stage saw an overnight ferry transfer from Naples on mainland Italy to the Island of Sicily (Palermo) for two stages.

Stage 7: After the sixth stage's finish the race entourage took a five hour train to Catania for stage 7. The seventh stage hosted a summit-finish on Mount Etna (1,892 meters). Media speculated that the stage would be a pivotal battle in the GC. However, tired riders rode at a slow pace because of the long transfers imposed by Giro race director Vincenzo Torriani. The stage results were decided in the final three kilometers.

Stage 12: a young Belgian rider named Eddy Merckx earned his first Giro stage win. Merckx won on the famous climb of the Block Haus della Majella.

Stage 19: the uphill finish to Tre Cime di Lavaredo had to be cancelled for irregularities. The controversy stemmed from the high number of riders getting pushed up the climb by the Italian tifosi (cycling fans). Stage winner Felice Gimondi was one of those riders.

Stage 19 (Cima Coppi): The Cima Coppi of 1967 Giro d’Italia, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, came on the 19th stage. The brutal stage ended at the summit of the climb. The nasty weather made the stage even tougher. The rain of the day turned to snow near the summit of the climb. Wladimiro Panizza (Vitadello) was 3 minutes ahead of the peloton as the climb began. On the steepest slope (14% to 18%) with 2 km to go the chasing riders started hanging on the team cars. After catching Panizza Felice Gimondi (Salvarani) slipped by and won the stage and the Cima Coppi. A furious race director Vincenzo Torriani could not let the flagrant violation of the rules stand and annulled the stage.

Stage 20: Jacques Anquetil (Fra) provided Gimondi with the inspiration to excel. Anquetil took the race lead on the mountain stage 20 (Flazarego, Pordoi, Rolle, Brocon), just three stages from the finish in Milan. The Frenchman finished 7th on the stage and gained over 6 minutes on his main rival Gimondi.

Stage 21: the Italian fought back the next day on the climb of the Tonale. At the finish in Tirano Gimondi finished 4th on the stage and took back 3’59” on the race leader. He took the Maglia Rosa off Anquetil’s back..

SPECIAL NOTE: Controversy arose because of the unusual circumstances surrounding Anquetil's time loss on the twenty-first stage. The outcome of the stage seemed strange when all the Italian riders were working against him.

Stage 22b: Felice Gimondi held onto the race lead and rode into Milan for the 1967 Giro d’Italia victory.
